‘Wires Crossed: Head, Heart, Balance' will form a new professional funambulism ensemble who will create and tour new work. The ensemble will create a core artistic piece that will tour to different locations. For each performance, the ensemble will work with local amateurs to create new elements for a site-specific performance.

The core work will premiere in August 2020 as part of the funambulism spectacle for Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture400 people from all around Europe will cross the River Corrib and the Claddagh Basin together, over a period of 2020 minutes. The site was chosen in acknowledgement of the loss of life in the river in recent years through suicide. Wires Crossed aims to unite communities in a public display of solidarity, courage and hope, to highlight the importance of looking after our mental health through support, encouragement and courage.

The work will then tour to other cities including a performance as part of the Timisoara ECOC 2021. Between January 2020 and August 2021, the ensemble will work with the project’s Artistic Team to devise the new work during creative residencies in Romania, Belgium and Ireland. The project will develop further by collaborating with universities such as the Université Libre de Bruxelles to publish scientific data on the wellness benefits of funambulism.

Testimonial from Irish Partner

Creative Europe funding provided Galway Community Circus with the opportunity to co-create one of our most ambitious projects to date, through vital support from our partners and the Creative Europe team. This is giving us the confidence to push the boundaries of our work through an innovative, cross-sectoral project.

We are building relationships with partners in new countries, increasing the scale of our work, and exploring links with sectors that we have not engaged with before. This supports the longer-term development of both our organisation and the European Youth and Social Circus sector.
