New EC Calls to Fund Heritage Label Projects & Heritage Days Events

The European Commission and the Council of Europe have issued two calls to support European Heritage Label projects as part of European Heritage Days cultural events. Up to 70,000 events are held each year attracting over 30 million visitors in 50 European countries.

Call 1: Support for European Heritage Label Sites projects

This new call targets European Heritage Label sites and invites them to carry out new cultural projects with a transnational dimension or that reflect on European history and shared heritage. Priority will be given to projects which foster digital transformation and digital heritage, sustainable cultural tourism, capacity building and resilience and recovery, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Up to €14,500 funding is available for short-term projects to be completed in 2022.

The main objectives of this call are to:

  • Encourage people, in particular young people, to engage with Europe’s cultural heritage and to reinforce a sense of belonging to the European common space.
  • Identify and promote communities working with heritage in line with European values and with a long-term perspective of collaboration.
  • Provide additional funding to European Heritage Label sites to support the development of their European Heritage Label project.
  • Motivate and encourage European Heritage Label sites to participate in the European Heritage Days.

Eligible applicants

  • In order to be eligible, applications must be submitted by European Heritage Label sites designated under the European Union action for the European Heritage Label, established through the Decision No 1194/2011/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 November 2011.
  • Project activities shall begin before 30 June 2022 and must be completed by 31 January 2023 at the latest.
  • European Heritage Label sites which have received a grant through the European Heritage Days joint action between the European Commission and the Council of Europe during the past three years are not eligible for this Call.
  • Deadline: 17th January 2022. You can find more information on this call and how to apply on European Heritage Days website.

Call 2: European Heritage Days Stories

The objective of this call is to identify, celebrate and enhance the European dimension of heritage work undertaken by EHDs communities in Europe. They want to encourage people to engage with Europe’s cultural heritage and einforce a sense of belonging. It aims to:

  • Encourage people to engage with Europe’s cultural heritage and to reinforce a sense of belonging to the European common space.
  • Collect testimonies/stories that give an insight into how communities understand the European dimension of local heritage.
  • Identify and promote communities working with heritage in line with European values and with a long-term perspective of collaboration.
  • Reward communities for their efforts and to encourage them to develop their Stories further.
  • Motivate and encourage communities, European Heritage Awards/Europa Nostra Award winners and European Heritage Label Sites to participate in the European Heritage Days.

Eligible applicants

  • The Call is open to European Heritage Days communities from participating countries, European Heritage Label sites, and EU Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Award winners (who have hosted an EHD in the last four years, 18 August 2018 – 31 October 2021). It is also expected that applicants will organise an EHD in 2022.
