THE FAVOURITE | OPENS 01 JANUARY 2019! 

European Cinema Night 5th December, Lighthouse Cinema

Between 3rd and 7th December, 34 Europa Network cinemas in 27 countries hosted the first edition of the European Cinema Night sponsored by Creative Europe MEDIA and Europa Cinemas. Celebrating all the European films which were made, distributed and exhibited thanks to MEDIA and Europa Cinema support. We held a free screening of The Favourite by Yorgos Lanthimos followed by a chat with Ed Guiney from Element Pictures on  The Favourite has had a very interesting journey through the development process! The film received MEDIA development funding in the very early stages of its development and was later taken on by director Yorgos Lanthimos and produced by Element Pictures.

The Favourite is winning awards and nominations everywhere it goes! Following the film's 10 BIFA awards, Element Pictures’ production The Favourite continues on its award path with Golden Globe nominations including Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, Best Screenplay and a Best Actress nomination for Olivia Colman in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy and Best Supporting Actress noms for both Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. 

The film has also achieved 14 nominations in the Critics’ Choice awards! Best Picture, Best Comedy, Best Director; Best Original Screenplay; Best ActressBest Comedy Actress for Colman, Best Supporting Actress for Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, and Best Ensemble Cast. This puts The Favourite in the lead as a major Oscar contender!

Mug (Twarz) is a Polish film directed by Małgorzata Szumowska. Jacek loves heavy metal, his girlfriend and his dog. His family, his small hometown, his fellow parishioners all see him as an amusing freak. He works on a construction site which is making the tallest statue of Jesus in the world. When a severe accident disfigures him completely, all eyes turn to him as he undergoes the first facial transplant in the country.

Mug is a blackly comic, biting and emotional drama from award-winning director Małgorzata Szumowska (Body, Elles, In the Name Of) which won the Silver Bear Jury Grand Prix at the 2018 Berlin International Film Festival and features stunning performances from Mateusz Kościukiewicz, Agnieszka Podsiadlik and Małgorzata Gorol. The film is supported by Creative Europe MEDIA Distribution Funding.
