Irish MEDIA film Vivarium to premiere at Critics’ Week at Cannes Film Festival

Congratulations to Irish company, Fantastic Films, whose film Vivarium has been selected to screen as part of the Semaine de la Critique at the Cannes Film Festival 2019!

Imogen Poots (I Kill Giants) and Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) star in this sci-fi thriller directed by Lorcan Finnegan and written by Garret Shanley. The story sees a young couple in search of the perfect starter home. After following a mysterious real estate agent to a new housing development, the couple becomes trapped in a maze of identical houses and are forced to raise an otherworldly child...

Fantastic Films received €50,000 from MEDIA's Single Project funding scheme in 2014 to develop Vivarium. Read our Fantastic Films interview from 2016 in which the team talk about genre films and how their MEDIA funding awards helped their development process.

Having a 'niche' focus has very been important. Doing one thing and doing it well is the big lesson we’ve learned. There is a lot of talent  across Europe and a lot of great films being made. So how does a company based on the periphery of Europe make a 'space' for itself? We decided we needed to focus on content that would set us apart and that we could do well. We are huge fans of genre films so it was an obvious area that we could bring both passion and expertise to. Brendan McCarthy

The film is a European co-production with Brendan McCarthy and John McDonnell producing for Dublin’s Fantastic Films along with Jean-Yves Roubin of Belgium’s Frakas Productions and Alexander Brøndsted of Denmark’s Pingpong Film.

Vivarium also recieved funding from Screen Ireland, Wallimage, BE TV/ VooTV, the Danish Film Institute, the Copenhagen Film Fund and Eurimages
