Here's a quick round-up of some of the upcoming animations, TV series, films from Irish companies to keep an eye on. All projects have received funding from various Creative Europe MEDIA funding schemes in recent years.
Becca's Bunch | Animated TV Series | JAM Media
Becca’s Bunch starts 02 July on Nick Jr UK at 7am and 7pm everyday. A 52 X 11' pre-school comedy series about a little bird, Becca, who has a big heart.
Finding Joy | TV Series | Treasure Entertainment.
Finding Joy is a six-part comedy series written by Amy Huberman and directed by Kieron J Walsh. Joy who suffers a painful breakup and goes on to look for happiness in all the wrong places. The series is produced for RTÉ by Treasure Entertainment who received Slate Development funding for the series. RTÉ is co-producing with Acorn TV which it has done previously on dramas Striking Out and Acceptable Risk. Status: In Production, June 2018.
Sea Fever | Feature Film | Fantastic Films
A supernatural thriller written and directed by Neasa Hardiman and produced by Fantastic Films who received Single Project Development funding for Sea Fever in 2014. Sea Fever won Cannes Frontières 2018 Post-production award. Status: In Post Production.
The Favourite | Feature Film | Element Pictures
A period comedy drama directed by Academy Award® nominee Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster; The Killing of a Sacred Deer) based on a screenplay by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara. The Favourite received Creative Europe MEDIA funding in its early development stages in 2004. A long-term passion project for Yorgos Lanthimos, produced by Irish company Element Pictures.
Early 18th century, and England is at war with the French. A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne’s ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah who takes under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at a return to her aristocratic roots.
This is Element's and Yorgos' third MEDIA supported collaboration after The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. The Favourite opens in cinemas in January 2019.
Metal Heart | Treasure Entertainment
Metal Heart received Slate Funding in 2015. The film will have its world premiere at the 2018 Galway Film Fleadh and has been nominated for their 2018 Bingham Ray New Talent Award. Directed by Hugh O'Connor and written by Paul Murray. Twin sisters Emma and Chantal are worlds apart. Emma is self-conscious, and unsure of which path to take in life – she dreams of starting a band with her best friend Gary, who secretly has a crush on her. Chantal, meanwhile, is beautiful, confident, and knows exactly where her life is headed. When their parents go away for the summer, their simmering sibling rivalry threatens to boil over...
The End of Romance | Feature Film | Black Sheep
Director and writer, Trish McAdam received the largest single funding award from the Irish Film Board in 2017 for her feature about Maud Gonne. The project was awarded Single Project Development funding in 2015. Status: In Development.
Never Grow Old | Feature Film | Ripple World Pictures
This project received Single Project development in 2008. Never Grow Old is a western starring John Cusack. Status: Post Production.
