MEDIA and EU supported films screening this month across Ireland in cinemas and online.

We also highlight films showing in independent cinemas and cinema clubs that are part of the Europa Cinemas network as well as films supported by other Creative Europe and EU initiatives such as Eurimages Cinema Fund, European Film Promotion, the European Film Awards, European Cinema Night and the LUX Audience Award. The Irish members of Europa Cinemas include:

MEDIA FILMS AT CANNES

This year nine films supported by Creative Europe MEDIA will screen at Cannes Film Festival and four will compete for the Palme D’Or.

CAIRO CONSPIRACY | Irish Film Institute, Dublin

Tarik Saleh’s CAIRO CONSPIRACY was shortlisted for Best International Feature Film for the 2023 Oscars. The film was also part of the Feature Film Selection for the 35th European Film Awards.

Adam, a fisherman's son, is given a scholarship to study at the Al-Azhar University in Cairo where he is soon recrruited as a government informant. When the Grand Imam suddenly dies, Adam becomes a pawn in a power struggle between Eqypt's religious and political elites.

This French and Swedish production was supported by MEDIA development funding.

GODLAND | Triskel Arts Centre, Cork, 14 - 16 May

Godland (Vanskabte Land) by Hlynur Pálmason is the fictional tale of a 19th-century Danish pastor sent to establish a new church in a remote area of Iceland. Lutheran priest Lucas (Elliott Crosset Hove) finds the locals hostile to his spiritual message but he is fascinated by the beauty of the natural world around him. He aspires to take use the new technology of the camera to capture the people and the landscape. GODLAND is a co-production between France, Sweden, Iceland and Denmark and was supported in development and distribution by MEDIA.

RODEO | Triskel Arts Centre Cork 21 - 24 May

Directed by Lola Quivoron, this is a rites-of-passage drama set in a French social housing estate. Julia (Julie Ledru) lives in a stressful home with her mother and brother, her only escape being urban dirt-biking. An expensive hobby Julia works around by stealing second-hand bikes for sale. Soon she gets involved with a gang who revels in daredevil antics while their base is used to repurpose stolen goods. As she becomes more embroiled in the gang’s activities, Julia reveals plans for a heist that could net them a small fortune. The distribution of RODEO is supported by MEDIA's Films on the Move funding support.

TRIANGLE OF SADNESS | IFI@Home

Set in the world of world fashion, TRIANGLE OF SADNESS by Swedish director Ruben Östlund is a satire in which a pair of models find themselves at a crossroads in their careers. Fashion model couple Carl and Yaya are invited on a luxury cruise. When the yacht sinks they become stranded on a desert island with a group of billionaires and a cleaning lady. In the fight for survival, old hierarchies are turned upside down since the cleaning lady is the only one who knows how to fish. A co-production between companies from Sweden, Germany, France, and Turkey.
