News about European films supported by the EU funding and highlighting independent cinemas and cinema clubs that are part of the Europa Cinemas network in Ireland. Includes news from EU initiatives such as Eurimages Cinema Fund, European Film Promotion, the European Film Awards, European Cinema Night, and the LUX Audience Award.

European Film Awards Best Feature Film Nominees Round 2
After announcing the first round of selected feature films in August, the European Film Academy has announced that 16 more films have been chosen chosen to complete their shortlist of 45 fiction features that will compete at the European Film Awards.
The second round of films nominated for Best Feature include works by Mike Leigh and Pedro Almodóvar. Irish production company, Wild Atlantic Pictures is co-producer on The End. The film was supported by European fund Eurimages. Starring Tilda Swinton, George MacKay, Michael Shannon, Moses Ingram and Bronagh Gallagher, The End is about a wealthy family surviving in a palatial bunker, two decades after the world has ended. Irish film Kneecap was selected in the first round to compete for best Feature Film.

IFI Horrorthon | 24th to 28th October
The Irish Film Institute’s annual IFI Horrorthon is back from Thursday 24th October to Monday 28th October. It will feature Irish and international films alongside classic gems, documentaries, filmmaker talks, a Horror Pub Quiz and live DJs.
Screenings will include The Life and Deaths of Christopher Lee, Halloween, To the Devil a Daughter and many more.

The Room Next Door | Lighthouse Dublin + Pálás Galway from 25th October
Shortlisted for Best Feature by European Film Awards 2024, The Room Next Door by Spanish director, Pedro Almodóvar stars Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore. In his first English-language feature, Almodóvar explores friendship, sickness and the fear of death.
Generation Fleadh Galway | 23rd to 26th October, Pálás Cinema + various venues
Generation Fleadh is the younger half of the Galway Film Fleadh for people aged 12 – 24. The 2024 festival takes place from 23rd to 26th October and will have film screenings and an educational film programme, an annual outreach programme in Galway City and County, collaborations with festivals and events, all informed by the youth voice through the GENERATION Fleadh Council and youth review panels.

EUNIC Short Shorts at Pálás Galway, 10th October at 6:00pm
EUNIC Short Shorts from Europe 2024. Action, comedy, animation, doc, fiction – expect this and more from Short Shorts from Europe Film Festival – a selection of European short films of twelve member countries of EUNIC Ireland. Let Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain entertain you with a variety of genres from contemporary, cutting-edge filmmakers. Cork International Film Festival and TUS Limerick School of Art and Design will also present short films from Ireland on the programme. All films in English or with English subtitles. After the screening the audience will be asked to vote for their favourite film via their smartphone.
