EU Commission launches free Carbon Calculator for audiovisual sector
The European Commission has launched the MEDIA carbon calculator to help audiovisual producers across the EU to calculate the carbon footprint of their productions. Using digital tools to power our green transition, this web application is designed to bring environmental awareness into the audiovisual sector. It analyses factors such as energy consumption, transportation, and material usage for a comprehensive insight into carbon emissions.
Free of charge, the MEDIA carbon calculator underscores the Commission’s commitment to establishing a unified CO2 emissions measurement methodology for the audiovisual sector, as outlined in the Media and Audiovisual Action Plan. Furthermore, it will encourage stakeholders to pursue more sustainable practices and contribute to Europe's wide environmental goals.
In line with its EU objective of climate-neutrality by 2050, the European Commission has committed to collaborate closely with the film and audiovisual industry and (sub) national funds, with the objective of sharing existing best practices and agreeing on common tools and green standards.
Why develop an EU carbon calculator?

- The Commission’s Media and Audiovisual Action Plan published in 2020 included a specific action for the greening of the audiovisual ecosystem.
- The media carbon calculator was funded with €650,000 from the Creative Europe MEDIA programme. It will be particularly useful for producers of films and TV series, audiovisual sustainability officers, crew members in charge of carbon measurement, as well as film funds, in particular for European co-productions.
- A common methodology, free for users, will allow comparability and encourage uptake, thereby helping to build a common approach to the greening of the sector.
Using the MEDIA Carbon Calculator
The MEDIA Carbon Calculator calculates carbon emissions generated by the production of films, TV series and similar works. It is available to professional audiovisual producers across the EU, free of charge. It provides a calculation method and data which are harmonised across countries to ensure comparability and coherence, whilst adapting to national differences. The main carbon factors are related to energy consumption, travel, accommodation, and catering.
