News about European films supported by the EU funding and highlighting independent cinemas and cinema clubs that are part of the Europa Cinemas network in Ireland. Includes films made thanks to EU initiatives such as Eurimages Cinema Fund, European Film Promotion as well as events such as the European Film Awards, European Cinema Month, A Season of Classic Films, and the LUX Audience Award.

MEDIA Films Awarded at Cannes 2026

Six films supported by Creative Europe MEDIA won awards at 2026 Cannes Film Festival. Cristian Mungiu's Fjörd won the prestigious Palme d'Or.

Offical Competition Awards

Fjörd by Cristian Mungiu (Romania, France, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden) won the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival 2026. The film is about a Catholic Romanian family, the Gheorghius, who settle in a Norwegian village, the mother’s birthplace. They bond with their new neighbours the Halbergs. Despite their very different upbringings, the children of both families become close friends. Until the Gheorghius are suspected of hurting their own children.

Das Geträumte Abenteuer (The Dreamed Adventure)
by Valeska Grisebach received the Jury Prize, having benefited from European Co-development support. German filmmaker Valeska Grisebach’s long-awaited return is a realist film noir set in the border zone between Bulgaria and Turkey. A woman agrees to a deal to help an old acquaintance. She follows the him on his adventure but enters dangerous territory when confronted by her own desire. (Source: Cineuropa).

Notre Salut (A Man of His Time) by Emmanuel Marre
won the Best Screenplay award. Emmanuel Marre delivers a historical film set in the present day, depicting a Vichy official who dreams big, turning his camera on the flip side of the grand narrative of history. (Source: Cineuropa).

Coward by Lukas Dhont
, supported through the film distribution scheme, brought home the Best Actor prize for its two lead performers, Emmanuel Macchia and Valentin Campagne. A story of love, friendship and art in times of war, The film follows Pierre (Emmanuel Macchia), a very young man arriving at the rear of the front line in 1916. On the cusp of adulthood, he discovers both the horror of war and the power of human connection. (Source: Cineuropa).

Un Certain Regard

Elephants in the Fog by Abinash Bikram Shah (a MEDIA 360° supported project) won the Jury Prize. A thriller about a trans Nepalese matriarch searching for her disappeared daughter.

Siempre soy tu animal materno (Forever Your Maternal Animal) by Valentina Maurel
earned the Best Actress awards for its three lead performers: Daniela Marín Navarro, Marina de Tavira, and Mariangel Villegas. A young woman returns home to Costa Rica after years abroad to a mother who’s going through an identity crisis, and her broke younger sister who believes in God and the Illuminati.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (4k) | IFI Dublin, 10 - 18 June

Directed and written by Céline Sciamma, Portrait of a Lady on Fire (France) is set in 18th century France. Painter Marianne (Noémie Merlant) is commissioned by an affluent countess to paint the wedding portrait of her sheltered but headstrong daughter Héloïse (Adèle Haenel), in the hope it will find her a wealthy husband.While posing as her hired companion, Marianne is instructed to complete the portrait in secret, observing Héloïse by day and painting her by night. However, as the two women grow closer, their intimacy and attraction begins to blossom, paving the way for a star-crossed romance.

Enzo (2025) | Triskel Cork, 28 June to 01 July

Directed by Laurent Cantet and Robin Campillo, Enzo (France, Belgium, Italy) was written by Laurent Cantet, Robin Campillo, and Gilles March. Supported by Creative Europe MEDIA distribution funding.

Enzo, 16, defies his bourgeois family’s expectations by starting a masonry apprenticeship, a path far removed from the prestigious life they had envisioned for him. In their chic villa in the sun-drenched South of France, tensions simmer as relentless questions and pressures weigh on Enzo’s future and dreams. On the construction sites, however, Vlad, a charismatic Ukrainian colleague, shakes up Enzo’s world and opens the door to unexpected possibilities. (Source: Triskel Arts Centre).

Eagles of the Republic (2025) | Triskel Cork, 28 June to 01 July

Directed and written by Tarek Saleh, Eagles of the Republic (France, Italy, Belgium) was supported by Eurimages.

Egypt’s most adored actor, George Fahmy is pressured to star in a film commissioned by the highest authorities. He reluctantly accepts the role and finds himself thrown into the inner circle of power. Like a moth drawn to the flame he begins an affair with the mysterious wife of the general overseeing the film. Eagles of the Republic (France, Italy, Belgium); directed by Tarek Saleh

Sirāt (Spain, France) | IFI at Home, available now to rent online

Sirāt (2025) is directed by Oliver Laxe and written by Santiago Fillol and Oliver Laxe.

A father (Sergi López) and son go to a dance rave in the mountains Morocco in search of Mar who vanished months ago at one of these parties. Surrounded by electronic music and a raw, unfamiliar sense of freedom, they hand out her photo again and again. Hope is fading but they push through and follow a group of ravers heading to one last party in the desert. As they venture deeper into the burning wilderness, the journey forces them to confront their own limits.
