EUPL Funding Opportunities for Bookshops and Publishers

The European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL) celebrates contemporary European literature, shines a spotlight on emerging authors, and encourages the circulation of literary works across languages and cultures.

Three calls for applications will be organised across 2026 and 2027 offering multiple opportunities to support innovative initiatives promoting EUPL authors and their works.

The first call for applications for Bookshop Events for Translated EUPL Authors opens on 1 September and closes on 30 September 2026.

Programme Concept

The programme aims to promote translated EUPL authors through bookshops in the
countries where their works have been, or are planned to be, published in translation.
Bookshops will serve as the main platforms for increasing the visibility of translated
EUPL literature, with a particular focus on events that encourage direct interaction
between authors, translators and readers.

The programme encourages activities that go beyond one-off promotional events by supporting community-based initiatives such as book clubs and recurring literary activities that contribute to the development of reader engagement.

Eligible Applicants

Applications may be submitted by:

• Bookshops, particularly those that organise literary events, host author
  meetings and/or run book clubs.
• Publishers that have published, or are planning to publish within the
  implementation period, translations of works by EUPL authors;
• Applications submitted jointly by publishers and bookshops are strongly
  encouraged.

Eligible Activities

Funded activities must:

• Feature one EUPL author whose work is available in translation, or scheduled
  to become available in translation within the implementation period, in the
  language of the country where the activity takes place;
• Promote translated EUPL literature and contribute to increasing its visibility
  among readers;
• Take place within the timeframe specified in the relevant call;
  
• Be open to the public;
• Be organised in a physical bookshop, public library, cultural centre or another
  literary venue involving the participation of booksellers.
• Eligible activities include:
  • Translated EUPL Author Tours
  • A series of events organised in two to five bookshops, preferably located in
    different cities.
  • Maximum number of events per proposal: 5.
  • Proposals including at least one book club meeting are encouraged.
    Book Clubs
  • Reading groups dedicated to one or more EUPL authors, designed to
    encourage reader engagement and discussion around translated European
    literature.
  • Author Event
  • Public conversations, readings or meetings involving an EUPL author and,
    where relevant, their translator.
  • Events should take place in a bookshop or involve the active participation of
    booksellers.

Call Application Details

• The first call opens on 1 September and closes on 30 September 2026.
• Implementation period: 1 November 2026 – 30 June 2027.

• Only applications submitted within the indicated deadline and following the
  requirements set out in this call will be considered eligible for evaluation.
• Applications will be assessed by the EUPL consortium according to the eligibility and
  award criteria outlined above. Applicants will be informed of the results following
  completion of the evaluation process.
