Despite the unease of her local community and church, she marries the love of her life, a Norwegian oil-rig worker, Jan (Stellan Skarsgård), who is often away working for long periods of time. 'Breaking the Waves, by turns confrontational and tender, profane, and pure, is an extraordinary examination of the expansiveness of faith and of its limits.' They are, however, in an unhealthy, competitive relationship, rife with petty one-upmanship, lies, and theft. The couple’s toxic co-dependency takes a turn for the when Thomas breaks through as a contemporary artist. Jealous of her partner’s fame, Signe hatches a plot to regain dominance. Directed by Jan P. Matuszynski, the film begins in May 1983 in Poland. High school student Grzegorz Przemyk and his older friend Jurek are arrested without cause by the local militia. At the police station, the pair are brutally beaten. Soon after, Grzegorz dies from his injuries. Based on true events, the film follows the story of Jurek, the only witness of the beating, who overnight became the number one enemy of the State.
