MEDIA and EU supported films screening this month across Ireland in cinemas and online.

We also highlight films showing in independent cinemas and cinema clubs that are part of the Europa Cinemas network as well as films supported by other Creative Europe and EU initiatives such as Eurimages Cinema Fund, European Film Promotion, the European Film Awards, European Cinema Night and the LUX Audience Award. The Irish members of Europa Cinemas include:

GAZE: International LGBTQIA Film Festival | IFI and Lighthouse Cinema

GAZE: International LGBTQIA Film Festival takes place from 3 - 7 August in Dublin with screenings in the Irish Film Institute and Lighthouse Cinema. GAZE has worked with Neuro Pride Ireland to move towards better access which includes a relaxed screening of Irish Shorts. They also collaborate with aemi and the Iris Prize on specially curated shorts programmes.

The opening gala for GAZE 2023 features LE PARADIS plus a pre-feature short on Thursday 3rd August in Lighthouse Cinema.

BREAKING THE WAVES 4K | Irish Film Institute, 4 - 10 August

Bess McNeill (Emily Watson) lives a calm Christian life in the Scottish Highlands. Despite the unease of her local community and church, she marries the love of her life, a Norwegian oil-rig worker, Jan (Stellan Skarsgård), who is often away working for long periods of time. 'Breaking the Waves, by turns confrontational and tender, profane, and pure, is an extraordinary examination of the expansiveness of faith and of its limits.' On the surface, Signe (Kristine Kujath Thorp) and Thomas (Eirik Sæther) appear to be a model couple; attractive, successful, and well-liked, she works in a coffee shop while he is an artist. They are, however, in an unhealthy, competitive relationship, rife with petty one-upmanship, lies, and theft. The couple’s toxic co-dependency takes a turn for the when Thomas breaks through as a contemporary artist. Jealous of her partner’s fame, Signe hatches a plot to regain dominance. Directed by Jan P. Matuszynski, the film begins in May 1983 in Poland. High school student Grzegorz Przemyk and his older friend Jurek are arrested without cause by the local militia. At the police station, the pair are brutally beaten. Soon after, Grzegorz dies from his injuries. Based on true events, the film follows the story of Jurek, the only witness of the beating, who overnight became the number one enemy of the State.

A Season of Classic Films | June to December 2023

ACE (Association des Cinémathèques Européennes) unveiled details of the 4th A Season of Classic Films, a series of free screenings designed to attract younger audiences to our shared cinematic cultural heritage. The 2023 programme will run June to December 2023 across European cinemas and online.

The initiative also seeks to raise awareness of the work of European film archives, connecting the public with cinema history and the significance of film preservation. A Season of Classic Films is supported by the EU Creative Europe MEDIA programme.

The fourth edition of A Season of Classic Films will comprise a diverse programme curated by more than 20 European film heritage institutions. The world premiere restorations will be presented as free screenings across Europe until the end of 2023 and will be supplemented by educational tools to attract younger audiences to European film heritage, such as live music, introductions by filmmakers etc.

The films span early silent classics, thrillers and romantic comedies, to works focusing on current topics such as feminism or the impact of urban planning to environment. Many of the films will be globally accessible online for free for a limited time to further promote European film heritage to international audiences. All films are available with English subtitles.

access>CINEMA Online Information Session August 2023

Are you interested in screening films locally in your town or community? access>CINEMA hosts a number of Information Meetings per year for groups who are interested in the possibility of developing cultural cinema screenings in their area. Their next information session will be held online on Tuesday August 29th.

Each meeting covers subjects including film licensing, screening costs and equipment as well as details of the service provided by access>CINEMA to those wishing to become a member of their network. The meetings also give attendees a chance to tease out and obtain answers to their specific questions.
