MEDIA supported films screening this month across Ireland in cinemas and online.

We also highlight films showing in independent cinemas and cinema clubs that are part of the Europa Cinemas network as well as films promoted by Creative Europe and EU supported initiatives such as European Film Promotion, the European Film Awards, European Cinema Night and the LUX Audience Award.

TRIANGLE OF SADNESS | IFI@Home

Directed by Ruben Östlund and starring Woody Harrelson, Harris Dickinson, and Charlbi Dean. Östlund's follow-up to the THE SQUARE, a caustic evisceration of the art world, targets the excess and vanity of the super-rich.Carl (Harris Dickinson), a young male supermodel, and his girlfriend Yaya (Charlbi Dean), a successful social media influencer, have snagged a free cruise on a luxury yacht, with an idiosyncratic, Marx-quoting, frequently inebriated captain (Woody Harrelson).

Triangle of Sadness won Best European Film, Best Director (Ruben Östlund), Best Screenwriter (Ruben Östlund) and Best Actor (Zlatko Burić) at the European Film Awards 2022. It's also nominated for the LUX Audience Award 2023 - you can rate the 5 films nominated for the Lux Award 2023 here.

The film contains a sequence of flashing lights which might affect those susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.

Acclaimed European films that screened during European Cinema Month or nominated for European Film Awards both of which are supported by Creative Europe.

SAINT OMER | Lighthouse Dublin

SAINT OMER is director Alice Diop’s fiction feature film debut after a series of acclaimed documentaries. Young novelist Rama attends the trial of Laurence Coly, a young woman accused of killing her 15-month-old daughter by abandoning her to the rising tide on a beach in northern France. But as the trial continues, the words of the accused and witness testimonies will shake Rama’s convictions and call into question our own judgement.

The film was awarded with the Lion of the Future and the Silver Lion - Jury Prize at the 90th Venice International Film Festival. Diop was nominated for Best European Director and the film for Best Feature Film Selection at the 2022 European Film Awards.

HOLY SPIDER | Triskel Arts Centre Cork, 12-15 February

HOLY SPIDER is a crime thriller inspired by the true story of Iran’s most notorious serial killer directed by Ali Abbasi who also directed the award-winning BORDER. Journalist Rahimi (Zar Amir Ebrahimi) investigates the murders of several sex workers by the ‘Spider Killer’ who believes he is on a divine mission to cleanse the city of sinners.

Ebrahimi won the Best Actress Award at Cannes Film Festival 2022 for her performance in HOLY SPIDER. A MUBI release, the film will stream in Ireland, the UK, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile and more from 10th March 2023.

EO | Screening now at the IFI Dublin and Lighthouse Dublin

EO by Jerzy Skolimowski won the Jury Prize at Cannes and the European University Award (EUFA) at the European Film Awards 2022. The film was Poland’s entry for Best International Film for the 2023 Oscars.

Inspired by Robert Bresson’s Au Hasard Balthazar, the film follows the strange but moving adventures of a donkey wandering across Europe at the mercy of not so kind humans along the way.
