MEDIA Films at the 2024 Oscars
The MEDIA-supported film Anatomy of a Fall directed by Justine Triet won Best Original Screenplay at the 2024 Oscars. Written by Justine Triet and Arthur Harari, the film had five nominations for directing, film editing, best picture, writing and actress in a leading role for Sandra Hüller.
In total, five EU-supported films from Italy, France, Germany and Spain were nominated for Oscars. The other four nominated films were:
- Four Daughters, by Kaouther Ben Hania and Nadim Cheikhrouha, competed for the Best Documentary.
- Io Capitano, by Matteo Garrone, was nominated for the Best International Feature Film award.
- The Teachers' Lounge, by Ilker Catak, also competed for the Best International Feature Film award.
- Robot Dreams, by Pablo Berger, Ibon Cormenzana, Ignasi Estapé and Sandra Tapia Díaz, was shortlisted for the Best Animated feature film.
Four Daughters | The Lighthouse
The Tunisian docu-drama Four Daughters by Kaouther Ben Hania and Nadim Cheikhrouha, competed for Best Documentary feature film at the 2024 Oscars. The story of Ghofrane and Rahma Chikhaoui, their younger sisters Eya and Tayssir and their mother Olfa, is told through remembering the events that led to the older sisters joining ISIS. Actresses Ichrak Matar and Nour Karoui play the parts of Ghofrane and Rahma, and Hend Sabry plays Olfa when memories become too distressing. Actor Majd Mastoura plays all the male characters, a dramatic device adopted to let the female characters stand out.
access>CINEMA will release the Oscar-nominated docu-drama Four Daughters in Irish cinemas from March. Audiences in Galway will be able to see the film at Pálás from Sunday 17th March. The film will also screen across the access>CINEMA network of arts centres and film clubs over the coming months including a screening at Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray on Monday 27th May. More screenings will be announced shortly.

Sandra (Sandra Hüller), a German writer, her French husband Samuel, and their eleven-year-old son Daniel live a secluded life in a remote town in the French Alps. When Samuel is found dead in the snow below their chalet, the police question whether he committed suicide or was killed.

Robot Dreams | IFI Dublin from Friday 22nd March
Robot Dreams, by Pablo Berger, Ibon Cormenzana, Ignasi Estapé and Sandra Tapia Díaz, was shortlisted for the Best Animated feature film at the 2024 Oscars. Based on a graphic novel by American writer, Sara Varon, Robot Dreams tells the story of a friendship between a dog and a robot in New York during the 1980s. Told without dialogue, the film explores the love between friends and is also a love letter to New York.
