Lux Nominees: Flee; Great Freedom; Quo Vadis, Aida?

MEDIA supported films screening this month across Ireland in cinemas and online. We also highlight films showing in independent cinemas and cinema clubs that are part of the Europa Cinemas network.

YOUNG PLATO | Screening now in IFI, Dublin

YOUNG PLATO is an Irish observational documentary set in post conflict Belfast’s Ardoyne, where a marginalised working class community has been plagued by poverty, drugs and guns. A portrait of headmaster, Kevin McArevey, and his visionary team who empower children to see beyond the boundaries and limitations of their own community. Made by Declan McGrath and Neasa Ní Chianáin, the documentary was proudly supported in development by MEDIA Slate Funding awarded to Soilsiú Films.

THE CELLAR | Out now in Irish cinemas

Directed by Brendan Muldowney, THE CELLAR stars Elisha Cuthbert, Eoin Macken, Abby Fitz, Dylan Fitzmaurice-Brady. A mother has to confront an ancient entity after her daughter disappears in the cellar of their new mansion. Co-produced by Irish company, Savage Productions, the film was supported in development by MEDIA Slate Funding.

GREAT FREEDOM (Austria, Germany) | IFI Dublin

From Austrian director Sebastian Meise, GREAT FREEDOM is one of the three nominees for LUX Audience Award this year (see below for details). In post-war Germany, Hans ends up in prisoned time and again for being gay. He is denied freedom systematically for breaching paragraph 175 of the German Criminal Code. The one constant in his life becomes his long-time cellmate, Viktor, a convicted murderer.

MADRES PARALELAS (SPAIN) | IFI, Triskel Cork

MADRES PARALELAS (Parallel Mothers) is directed by Pedro Almoldovar and stars Penelope Cruz. Two new single mothers, one older and one an adolescent, meet in hospital and form a strong bond. Their fates will be intertwined in ways they can't forsee. Parallel Mothers has been nominated for two Oscars: Penelope Cruz for Best Actress in a Leading Role; and Alberto Iglesias for Best Original Score.

NOWHERE SPECIAL | Volta VOD

Directed by Uberto Pasolini and starring Daniel Lamont and James Norton. John devotes his life to raising his young son Michael after the child’s mother leaves them. But John only has a few months to live. Since he has no family to turn to, he will spend the days left to him looking for a new and perfect one to adopt Michael.

LUX AUDIENCE AWARD 2022

Three films have been shortlisted for the second edition of the LUX Audience Award:

  • Flee by Jonas Poher Rasmussen screens in IFI Dublin until 10th March
  • Great Freedom by Sebastian Meise screens in IFI 11-17th March.
  • Quo Vadis Aida? by Jasmila Žbanić will be screened by both Lighthouse Dublin & Palás Galway 6pm on 29th March. It is also available to view on Volta VOD.

You have up until 25th May 2022 to view the films and rate them on the LUX Audience Award website.

When you vote you are in with a chance to attend the LUX Audience Award Ceremony on 8th June at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
