Breaking the Patterns is a Creative Europe project that promotes the development of talent, professional growth, and the generation of new job opportunities in cultural and creative industries.
Breaking the Patterns (2023 - 2025) supports emerging artists and creative professionals at the start of their career within the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI), fostering their innovation and talent to promote both individual creative growth and the generation of further job opportunities.
Participants organise multi-media exhibitions to display and promote their work, in the process building their expertise and knowledge of the professional world of galleries, art curation, and exhibitions.
Project Activities
- 72 participants from Ireland, Portugal, Greece and Spain connect their work in 8 self-managed exhibitions in Dublin, Lisbon, Crete and Seville.
- By supporting 72 participants in independently organising multimedia exhibitions, this project aims to build their expertise in the professional art world and dismantle barriers to accessing CCI, particularly for those from marginalised or disadvantaged backgrounds.
- Through international exhibitions (both physical and digital) and a tailored creative toolkit, Breaking the Pattern will strive to overcome obstacles such as financial insecurity and limited opportunities to showcase work.
- Partnering across Ireland, Greece, Portugal, and Spain, the project will champion cultural exchange and integration, enhancing social engagement, intercultural dialogue, and innovation within the creative sector.
'This grant was hugely beneficial to our organisation and partners. In two inspiring years, Breaking the Patterns hosted 72 artist residencies across Seville, Lisbon, and Chania, offering emerging European artists vital space, time, and mentorship to develop their practices. Our partners organised 7 impactful international exhibitions - two in each city and two end of year showcases in Ireland and a final exhibition at GOMA in Waterford. The impact of has been profound. Many participating artists described the experience as “life-changing” and “transformative,” highlighting how it gave them the confidence and visibility needed to establish themselves in a competitive artistic field. The programme fostered strong intercultural dialogue, new collaborations and lasting networks across Europe. It has truly been a wonderful project leaving a legacy that will continue to shape the professional journeys of artists long after the programme ends.’ Capacity Ireland
