The School of Spectacle will deliver five international ‘training through production’ schools in outdoor arts for up to 125 international creative practitioners from seven small ECoC cities and candidate cities over two years. It will grow a culture of sustainable outdoor arts activity in these cities, that will in turn build career opportunities for creative talent and develop new audiences.

The School of Spectacle training schools in outdoor arts will provide practitioners with core skills in outdoor arts management and specialist skills in a minimum of three of the eight complimentary specialist subjects listed below:

  • Costume
  • Storytelling
  • Puppetry
  • 3D
  • Movement
  • Fire
  • Lighting
  • Aerial

At the end of each school, practitioners will devise and deliver a small-scale outdoor arts event to the public, which will either be processional, installation or celebration based. The event will involve practitioners working with up to 40 local participants, who will be invited to take part as, for example, lantern bearers. Practitioners will gain both skills and experience in outdoor arts, and outstanding practitioners will be given the opportunity to progress through the school into traineeships.

Both the school and end of school event will contribute learning that will inform partner stakeholders how they can innovate and sustain outdoor arts within their ECoC host or candidate cities.
