Kino Games (2024 - 2027) is co-funded by Creative Europe’s Audience Development & Film Education scheme. The consortium is composed of two video game specialists, five cinemas, and one film festival from countries across Europe.

Due to Covid, numerous cinemas in Europe struggle to bring back their audience, especially the young adult generation. The emergence of streaming platforms is an additional challenge for cinemas. On the contrary, the video game industry experienced a significant growth in recent years.

Based on the Creative Europe project Cinnovate (ended March 2023) which aimed to bring innovative content into cinemas, the consortium is led by game ecosystem catalyst, SpielFabrique. Kino Games proposes to develop gaming events in cinemas with the goal to bring recurrent communities of casual gamers back to the cinemas to play and to watch films. Research done as part of Cinnovate shows a strong appetite for young audiences to attend gaming sessions (not E-sport) for a social experience in their local cinemas.

Five independent cinemas from five European countries and a European Film Festival have formed a consortium to test different gaming sessions models and better understand how to build a bridge between gaming and films. Supported by a company specialised in gaming events and renowned expert curators in film and video games, the activities developed in the 36 months will shows best ways to attract new audiences, learn about community marketing for films, and develop business models that will offer new sustainable opportunities to the participating cinemas.

SpielFabrique acts as a node, to connect video game and cinema industries. In partnership with Nerdic Events, they work closely with cinemas to offer tailor-made events to start building a recurrent video game audience within the cinema.
