SAGA (Sustainable Archives and Greener Approaches, 2024 - 2027) aims to prepare, improve and test archival institutions with regard to resilience and recovery against disasters and climate change, developing pilot solutions and joint recommendations for the protection and management of documentary heritage, and fostering the adoption of more sustainable practices.
The SAGA project will develop and pilot preventive and reactive methodologies for the archival institutions to apply against unexpected events by implementing new digital tools and policies to reduce damages and safeguard their heritage.
In addition it will promote a change of mindset and offer the necessary skills to smoothly move to greener approaches as well as create public awareness and visibility around these topics.
SAGA Vision
The overarching vision of SAGA is to transform the way archival institutions approach sustainability and risk management, ensuring the preservation of documentary heritage for future generations.
This vision will be realised through the development of innovative strategies, the adoption of green technologies, and comprehensive capacity-building initiatives. The SAGA project adopts an approach based on transnational cooperation, bringing together a diverse range of entities from Spain, Hungary, Malta, Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Poland and Slovakia.
SAGA Objectives
- Disaster Risk Management: Developing proactive strategies to prevent, mitigate, and respond to risks that threaten archival heritage.
- Sustainability: Introducing energy-efficient technologies, green infrastructure, and eco-friendly practices to reduce the environmental footprint of archival operations.
- Capacity Building and training: Providing training and resources to archival professionals and other key actors in relation to the issues addressed by the project equipping them with the tools and knowledge to implement sustainable and resilient practices effectively.
- Collaboration: Strengthening networks among archival institutions, policymakers, and cultural organizations to promote best practices and shared learning.
- Increasing the visibility of European heritage through available archives and transnational mobility of works and professionals.
‘The SAGA project has been of significant benefit to Munster Technological University (MTU), aligning closely with our institutional commitment to sustainability, digital innovation, and regional engagement. Through our Department of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) and Clean Technology Centre (CTC), MTU has contributed communications, pedagogical and environmental expertise to support the development of sustainable practices within the archival sector. The context of archives, archival collections, and the institutions that preserve them has offered a practical, novel, and stimulating domain in which to apply our knowledge. SAGA has fostered awareness of the urgent need for sustainable approaches to the management and preservation of archival materials. SAGA has expanded our institutional capabilities and enriched our capacity to support other sectors facing similar sustainability and digital transformation challenges. MTU has strengthened its European partnerships in a meaningful exchange of knowledge, tools, and methodologies.’ Munster Technological University, Cork & Kerry
