Studiotopia 2 is for established and emerging artists, scientists and young people to take a position on sustainable development. It involves cultural and innovative institutions promoting artists that want to be nurtured by researchers in the field of sciences and humanities, and want be informed by the latest developments in research and contribute to global discourses.

Studiotopia 2 builds upon the first results generated by the original Studiotopia project supported by Creative Europe between 2019 and mid end 2022. The project has been key in supporting a series of residencies between artists and scientists that were shown in various exhibitions.

The current proposal on a conceptual and contextual level opens up the Symbiocene which becomes the new perspective in which to formulate the challenges that will be faced by scientists and artists together. The Symbiocene is understood as mutual beneficial attempt between different entities. It is an ideal context in which to develop interdisciplinary reflection processes, at the same time, in reconsidering the natural and artificial differences, including technology in the human/natural/artificial relationship.

A new way of thinking about the nature of technology is not only possible but also necessary. In the field of the symbiotic method, it seems to be preferable thinking about artificial intelligence as a natural intelligence, in other world an intelligence that, just like the ‘natural one’ need to be fixed, need to learn and, somehow discover what is useful and what is not, what is ethic and what is not and so on. This prospective on artificial intelligence could be an important catalysator of innovation: it is a revolutionary pattern to follow for art, science and institution as well.

Studiotopia and Beta Festival Ireland

Beta Festival in Ireland is a new festival of art and technology co-founded by Aisling Murray and The Digital Hub who have made an initial five year commitment to the festival. The inaugural edition took place in November 2023 where over 2 weeks Ireland’s research and digital art communities come together.

Beta makes new technologies and complex themes accessible to the public and critically reflects on Ireland’s role as a global tech hub. Taking Ireland’s role as a central node in today’s networked world as a starting point this festival showcases and celebrates Ireland’s research and artistic communities through a combination of creativity, debate and experimentation.

Beta allows members of the public to engage playfully and critically with new technologies, essentially beta testing ethical issues facing society public through exhibitions, screenings, panel discussions and workshops. The festival creates a network, international platform and anchor for the community of digital artists and researchers based in Ireland. Providing commissioning, upskilling, residency and mentorship opportunities as well as nurturing a creative pipeline and creating pathways for industry collaboration.

The programme explores AI and creativity, immersive technologies and big ethical questions on diverse topics including the environmental impacts of our networked society, data equity, web3 and the third quantum revolution.

Beta Festival aims to:

  • Empower people in the way they think about and use new technologies.
  • Support and showcase Irish artists and researchers in art and technology.

Beta Festival of Art & Technology 2024 will be held in Dublin from 1st to 17th November.
