The artist Frances Healy undertook a residency in Ano Asites, Crete, to paint murals as part of an ongoing mural project.

Ano Asites Artist Residency on the Greek island of Crete is a small scale mural project that started in 2018 and is ongoing. Unlike the residency's sister 'The Lakkos Project', in the city of Heraklion, the murals must not conflict with the nature, and architecture of the village.

Murals must be painted onto walls that do not interrupt the traditional aesthetic. The murals must not conflict with the nature and architecture of the village. Artists are required to spend a bit of time in the village and develop a fitting concept.

‘In 2023, I attended an artist residency in Ano Asites, a small mountain village in Crete. What made the experience unforgettable was not only the breathtaking landscape, but the profound sense of community. I painted a mural on the side of an elderly woman’s house and every day she brought oranges and olives as I worked. Through a friendship with a local man, Spiros, who shared his knowledge of the flora and fauna, I began to understand the deep relationship the community has with its land. His insights inspired my mural. This residency marked a lasting shift in my practice: I now immerse myself in the soul of a place before creating, allowing the people, land, and spirit to guide the work. I also carry with me a renewed freedom - art does not need to be perfect; it simply needs to bring joy and connection.’ Frances Healy
