THIS OTHER EDEN | 17th December, IFI Dublin
The first Irish feature film to be directed by a woman, Muriel Box This Other Eden (1959) is a caustic comedy set in 1945 when the erection of a monument unsettles a small town. The film explores the effects and complicated memorialisation of Ireland’s War of Independence.
With a supporting cast of Abbey Players and a star turn from Leslie Philips, Audrey Dalton, Milo O’Shea and Hilton Edwards, This Other Eden is not just a critique of the past but a witty commentary on an emergent modern Ireland.
The film has been digitally remastered by the IFI Irish Film Archive in collaboration with the BFI under an initiative of the Association des Cinémathèques Européennes (ACE) with the support of the EU Creative Europe MEDIA programme as part of A Season of Classic Films initiative.

European Cinema Night in Lighthouse Dublin + Triskel Cork
The European Cinema Night 2022 will see five days of free screenings across Europe from 5th to 9th December. 2022. Creative Europe MEDIA joins the network of Europa Cinemas to host 'European Cinema Night – Sharing stories we love.' Members of the Europa Cinemas network will select the films to be screened and host Q&A with directors, actors or film critics to allow audiences the opportunity to discuss the film with other film-lovers.
In Ireland, Europa Cinema members Lighthouse Dublin and Triskel Arts Centre Cork will host European Cinema Night screenings.
CORSAGE, 7PM, Thursday 8th December, LIGHTHOUSE DUBLIN
Written and directed by Marie Kreutzer. Starring Vicky Krieps, Florian Teichtmeister, Jeanne Werner, Alma Hasan, Finnegan, Colin Morgan.
Empress Elisabeth of Austria is known for her beauty and fashion trends. But in 1877, she celebrates her 40th birthday and must fight to maintain her public image. With a future of only ceremonial duties in front of her, she rebels against her public image and comes up with a plan to protect her legacy.
The film received Eurimages funding. CORSAGE is nominated for European Film Awards for best European Film, European Director for Marie Kreutzer and European Actress for Vicky Krieps. The screening is free but please book your ticket on Lighthouse website here.

PETITE MAMAN, 6:45pm reception; 7:15pm screening, Friday 9th December, TRISKEL CORK
Triskel Arts Centre in Cork will host a free screening of Petite Maman, a sublime modern fairytale about the quiet wonder of mother-daughter relationships. After the death of her beloved grandmother, eight-year-old Nelly meets a mysterious friend in the woods. Together they embark on a fantastical journey of discovery which helps Nelly come to terms with this newfound loss. A favourite of the 2021 Berlin Film Festival, Céline Sciamma’s picture examines childhood, memory and loss with a typically delicate touch, elegantly weaved together into an enchanting and moving depiction of love and acceptance.
Cara Doherty, film critic with The Echo, will be in attendance to speak about the film, and there will be a drinks reception before the screening which each ticket holder is invited to attend.
This special preview screening of Petite Maman, presented as part of European Cinema Night, is free but ticketed. Tickets will be released at 10am on Thursday 8th December.
EUROPEAN FILM AWARDS, SATURDAY 10th December
Cork International Film Festival will collaborate with the European Film Academy in hosting a livestream of the 35th European Film Awards on Saturday, 10th December, which will be held in front of a live audience at the concert hall Harpa in Reykjavik, Iceland.
The ceremony honours the achievements of European cinema in 24 categories and welcomes special guests and representatives of the European Film Academy, such as the current President Agnieszka Holland, chair Mike Downey and board members like Nina Hoss, Baltasar Kormakur and many more.
This year’s award European Lifetime Achievement will be presented to director and screenwriter Margarethe von Trotta, and Palestinian director Elia Suleiman will be awarded the European Achievement in World Cinema award.
The full EFA nominations list includes the very best of European film, many of which screened at the 67th Cork International Film Festival 2022 including Carla Simón’s Alcarrás; Marie Kreutzer’s Corsage; Dmytro Sukholtkyy-Sobchuk’s Pamfir; Charlotte Well’s Aftersun; and Hlynur Pálmason’s Godland.
The ceremony will be broadcast live at 7.15pm Irish time (8.15pm CET). Tune in on Cork International Film Festival website here.

Titane directed by Julia Ducournau is a body horror thriller starring Agathe Rousselle. A young man with a bruised face is discovered in an airport. He claims his name to be Adrien Legrand, a child who disappeared ten years before. After Adrien is reunited with his father, gruesome murders start to happen in the region. The film was supported in development by MEDIA.
