BABEL (2022 - 2026) or the Art of Listening in Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) comes out of a long reflection on languages within the network of ASSITEJ International (Association of Theatre for Children and Young People) which focused on the communications processes, intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding in TYA and more extensively Performing Arts for Young Audiences.

The partners together with performers, artistic facilitators and researchers will investigate the opportunities given by artistic languages to create high-quality shows for children, overcoming the barrier of languages to foster intercultural and intergenerational dialogue in the Performing Arts for Young Audiences.

Babel is structured as a shared training pathway with a diverse set of activities that includes: Festivals/Babel Squares; Multi-lingual creation groups; Island of reflections; Mosaic pieces; Catalogue of Inspiration; and Intertwined pathways dedicated to young artists that will bring an extra-European dimension through sharing of the experience.

‘Baboró is thrilled to be a partner in our 4th Creative Europe large scale cooperation project. We strongly believe in the importance of cultural exchange programmes, given that we are located on the western fringes of Europe. BABEL will support 8 Irish artists to attend weeklong residencies exploring intercultural dialogue via practical workshops and seeing work together at arts festivals across Europe. will enliven and enrich the performing arts for children sector in Ireland and across Europe, whilst promoting the rights of children to full cultural citizenship and celebrating multilingualism. We are already aware of the significant impact of the project on artists’ practice and the opportunity for ongoing collaboration with European peers. We are excited about the future of the project and the benefits to the sector in Ireland. We will host our European colleagues during the festival in October 2024 and 2025.’ Aislinn Ó hEocha, Executive Artistic Director, Baboró, Galway.
