Wires Crossed: Head, Heart, Balance, is a Creative Europe small scale cooperation project, running from Oct 2019 – Sept 2022. The programme will focus on the creation of a new professional Funambulism Ensemble 'Bassalto', the creation of a new funambulism performance and scientific research into the neurological effects of funambulism on the brain.

Led by Director Sergi Ots, Choreographer Mariona Moya Monsuner and Technical Manager Bruno Frenette, Bassalto will complete residencies in Galway, Brussels and Timisoara over the course of the project, performing a show in each place with a group of 10 amateurs from each location.

Bassalto is an all female ensemble
. The name 'Bassalto' is a fusion of 'basalt'-taken from the basalt columns of the Giant's Causeway, Ireland, and 'basso'/'alto'- 'low' and 'high' from Italian, referencing the wires at different heights that will be used for their performance. Their debut performance, also called BassAlto, will premiere in Galway on 15th July 2022 and will also be performed during the LifeLine Spectacle on 16 July, 2022.

BassAlto residencies in 2022

  • 11-15 April Brussels, Belgium
  • 12-18 June Timisoara, Romania
  • 6-17 July in Galway, Ireland, with the premiere of BassAlto on 15th July.

Wires Crossed also received Erasmus+ funding.

'Creative Europe funding is providing Galway Community Circus the opportunity to co-create one of our most ambitious projects to date, through vital support from our partners and the Creative Europe team. This is providing us the confidence to push the boundaries of our work through an innovative, cross-sectoral project, building relationships with partners in new countries, increasing the scale of our work, and exploring links with sectors that we have not engaged with before, therefore supporting longer-term development of both our organisation and the European Youth and Social Circus sector.'
